How I work

Practical from first look to deployment.

I look beyond the visual layer. The aim is a site that works for visitors, is manageable for the owner and can be deployed safely without turning the live website into the testing ground.

01

Understand what already exists

I start by reviewing the current site, its content, structure, hosting and real maintenance problems before deciding what should change.

02

Preserve what is useful

Good content, recognisable branding and useful functionality are retained where they still serve a purpose.

A rebuild should solve problems, not redesign for the sake of it.

03

Build and test privately

I maintain my own isolated development infrastructure for website builds, migrations and testing.

Projects can be developed and reviewed away from public production systems before anything touches the live website.

04

Take it through deployment

Where required, I can handle the practical work around a launch too: WordPress migration, DNS, hosting, deployment, backups and post-launch support.

Private development environment

A controlled place to build, break, test and improve.

My development environment is separated from production and used for staging, migration testing and rebuild work. Major changes can therefore be validated before they are applied to a public website.

For client review, I can create temporary preview environments protected by expiring magic links. These previews can remain available for up to two weeks and automatically self-destruct when the review window ends, helping prevent abandoned preview systems from being left online or misused.

About me

John Ferguson

John Ferguson

I’m a web developer and infrastructure-focused problem solver based in Scotland. I specialise in rebuilding websites that have become dated, difficult to manage or no longer fit the needs of the organisation behind them.

My work covers WordPress development, custom functionality, website migrations, hosting, infrastructure and practical digital systems. I tend to approach projects from both sides: what the visitor needs to see, and what the person maintaining the site needs to work with every day.

Alongside my personal work, I am the founder of MeshaByte ↗, where I work on hosting, infrastructure and web-based solutions.
